What is an aptitude test?
Aptitude tests have right answers and a clock. That single difference changes almost everything about how they work.

The definition
An aptitude test measures how well you perform a defined reasoning task, usually under a time limit, and usually with a single correct answer per item. It aims to estimate capacity to learn or perform rather than knowledge you already hold, which is what an achievement test measures.
A note on scope: KnowYourself does not currently offer aptitude or reasoning tests. This guide exists because people researching psychometrics reasonably want to understand the whole landscape, not because we sell one.
The common types
Recruitment batteries usually draw from a small set of formats.
- Numerical reasoning — interpret tables and charts and perform calculations, typically percentages, ratios and trends.
- Verbal reasoning — read a passage and judge whether statements are true, false or indeterminate given only that text.
- Logical or inductive reasoning — identify a rule from a sequence and apply it.
- Abstract or diagrammatic reasoning — spot the pattern in shapes with no verbal or numerical content.
- Situational judgement — choose responses to workplace scenarios; strictly speaking a judgement measure rather than an ability test.
How they are scored
Raw score is the number of correct answers, sometimes adjusted for speed. That raw score is then compared against a norm group — often other applicants for similar roles — and reported as a percentile. This is why a score that sounds high in absolute terms can be unremarkable in context, and vice versa.
Many modern tests are adaptive: item difficulty adjusts to your performance, so two candidates never see the same test and the raw number of correct answers is not directly comparable.
Can you improve at them?
Practice produces real gains, mostly in the first few attempts, and mostly from familiarity: knowing the format, the time budget per item, and the traps. Beyond that the curve flattens. Practice does not change your underlying reasoning capacity much, but it does stop the format itself from costing you marks.
Where to find them
Aptitude tests are usually administered by employers through specialist providers, and most providers offer official practice tests for the specific instrument you will sit. Practising the exact format you will face is far more useful than generic practice.
Frequently asked questions
Does KnowYourself offer aptitude tests?
No. We offer personality, emotional intelligence, relationship and wellbeing self-assessments. We do not currently offer numerical, verbal, logical or abstract reasoning tests.
What is a good aptitude test score?
It depends entirely on the norm group. Scores are usually reported as percentiles against other candidates, so the same raw score means different things for different roles.
